Overview

This specialized ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University certificate program prepares you for the academic demands of the university through three (3) pillars: numeracy, literacy and academic success. You will receive a University certificate upon completion of the University Preparatory Program (UPP).

Who should attend?

Note: This program and its courses are only available to those with a conditional offer to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University that requires successful completion of the University Preparatory Program.

Students will be notified by the Office of the Registrar of any conditional offers that include completion of this program.

This program allows students to upgrade their knowledge in key prerequisite areas prior to beginning an undergraduate degree program at Ontario Tech. You may use the knowledge and skills developed through this program to prepare you for success in undergraduate University studies.


Required courses and components

  • Academic Success

    Course code: UNIV 100CL

    This course helps you develop an understanding of student academic readiness and success concepts including:

    • Synthesize and apply a personal plan for academic success.
    • Develop stronger self-efficacy and resilience in personal, academic and career choices.
    • Apply time management skills to university courses and planning.
    • Apply successful mental health strategies in university and beyond.
    • Achieve a higher level of intercultural communication competency.
    • Understand the core responsibilities of post-secondary student success, while developing coping mechanisms, study skills and student persistence strategies.
    Attendance is required. A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass. All final grades of 70% or higher will be recorded as PAS, indicating a "passing grade". For successful completion of the University Preparatory Program, learners must complete all required courses with a passing grade.
  • Academic Writing

    Course code: WRIT 100CL

    This course helps you develop a firm understanding of oral, and written English, with a focus on academic literacy including:

    • Develop active reading, note-taking and comprehension strategies for critical thinking.
    • Improve reading and writing skills by understanding elements of style, academic vocabulary and text forms.
    • Develop an understanding of producing original content in academic writing by identifying audience, purpose and genre.
    • Organize ideas into cogent arguments by using active voice, and proper diction.
    • Develop problem-solving skills needed to be a critical reader and writer.
    Attendance is required. A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass. All final 70% or higher grades will be recorded as PAS, indicating a "passing grade". To successfully complete the University Preparatory Program, learners must complete all required courses with a passing grade.
  • Mathematics

    Course code: MATH 100CL

    This course helps you develop a general understanding and knowledge of mathematical concepts for pre-calculus, including:

    • Calculate the rate of change, the slope of a line, secants and tangents, and line limits.
    • Use and verify graphically and algebraically, a variety of functions, including polynomial, trigonometric, and exponential functions.
    • Explain the limit of a function and make connections to the derivative of that function.
    • Verify graphically and algebraically the rules for determining derivatives.
    Attendance is required. A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass. All final grades of 70% or higher will be recorded as PAS, indicating a "passing grade". For successful completion of the University Preparatory Program, learners must complete all required courses with a passing grade.

The schedule is subject to change. Courses typically run Tuesdays through Thursdays for three (3) hours per day.

*Mid-term/quizzes may be scheduled outside of the standard course schedule. See the course syllabus for details.

Note: Mathematics is not required for those with a conditional offer to a program in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.

Please note that a $600 CDN non-refundable deposit is due June 18, 2024. 

The remaining program fees are due July 15, 2024.

Final grades are typically posted within two (2) weeks of the last day of classes.

*If full payment is not received by the listed deadline you will be removed from the program and refunded all program tuition fees with the exception of the $600 CDN non-refundable deposit.

Removal from the program will void any conditional offer to an ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University undergraduate program that requires successful completion of the University Preparatory Program.


Requirements

To register for the program, learners must:

*Step 1: Accept the offer sent to them by the Office of the Registrar through the online form provided with the conditional offer.

Step 2: Pay the non-refundable deposit by the posted deadline.

Step 3: Pay all remaining program fees by the posted deadline.

*Individuals who have completed Step 1 above will receive an email from Continuous Learning outlining the next steps, including detailed payment instructions for Steps 2 and 3 above. 

Full payment for the program must be received by the university by the posted deadline.  If payment is not received by the posted deadline you will be removed from the program and refunded all program tuition fees with the exception of the non-refundable deposit. Removal from the program will void any conditional offer to an ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University undergraduate program that requires successful completion of this program.

Completion of the University Preparatory Program requires:

  • Successful completion of all three (3) of the above-listed courses (Mathematics, Academic Writing, and Academic Success) except for learners with a conditional offer to the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities*.
  • Learners must complete all required courses with a passing grade. A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass for all required courses.
  • Course attendance is very important and mandatory for the successful completion of the University Preparatory Program.

*Learners with a conditional offer to the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities that requires them to complete the University Preparatory Program must successfully complete the Academic Writing and Academic Success courses only.  

Materials

Some courses in this program may require additional materials (for example a textbook). These materials will be listed in each course syllabus. Cost and procurement of additionally required materials are the learner's responsibility.

    • Minimum computer requirements for each of the Faculties can be found on the . If purchasing a computer, it is strongly recommended that those completing the University Preparatory Program as a part of a conditional offer to a program at Ontario Tech University follow the computer requirements for the Faculty/program their conditional offer is for.

  • Audio device (examples: speakers, headphones/earbuds, headset)
  • Additional software
    • A word processor 
    • Some courses in this program may require additional software. These will be listed in each course syllabus. Cost and procurement of additional required software is the learner's responsibility.
*To participate in video conferencing for courses, the device with internet access, microphone, webcam, and speaker/headphone capabilities can be the computer listed above or a different device.

Policies

  • Academic Integrity
    Learners are expected to adhere to the conduct standards of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University. Information regarding student conduct can be found in the  in the 
  • Other
    Those completing the University Preparatory Program are subject the policies of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University and Continuous Learning. ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV policies can be found in the . Continuous Learning policies can be found in the Regulations section of the Continuous Learning website. Specifically, those completing the University Preparatory Program are expected to adhere to the General and Open enrolment regulations.
  • Successful course and program completion

    A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass for all required courses. All final grades of 70% or higher will be recorded as PAS, indicating a "passing grade". All final grades lower than 70% will be recorded as FAL, indicating a "failing grade".

    For successful completion of the University Preparatory Program, learners must complete all required courses with a passing grade.

    *Note: Additional conditions may be required for the successful completion of individual courses. These conditions will be noted in the course syllabus and must be met for the successful completion of the course and, therefore, the program. 

    Learners will receive a university certificate upon successful completion of this program. 

  • Withdrawls

    2024 Withdrawal deadline: Monday, July 15 2024 4 p.m. EST

    Withdrawal from the University Preparatory Program will void any conditional offer to ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University requiring successful completion of this program.

    Learners who wish to drop the program must send their withdrawal request to continuouslearning@ontariotechu.ca on or before the withdrawal deadline (above). Withdrawal requests submitted before the withdrawal deadline are subject to a full refund of program fees with the exception of the non-refundable deposit. 


Frequently asked questions

  • Am I guaranteed admission into my undergraduate program of choice?

    Provided that you successfully complete the University Preparatory Program, you will seamlessly transition into one of the undergraduate programs to which you previously applied.

    Attendance is required. A 70% or higher final grade is considered a pass. All final grades of 70% or higher will be recorded as PAS, indicating a "passing grade". For successful completion of the University Preparatory Program, learners must complete all required courses with a passing grade.

    Please note: You cannot transition into Collaborative Nursing, Computer Science and Medical Laboratory Science because they are competitive programs.

  • How long is this program?
    This program is 8 weeks in length.
  • Will I qualify for OSAP if I take this program
    Students enrolled in the University Preparatory Program will not qualify for OSAP funding; student assistance is available for subsequent enrolment in an undergraduate degree program.
  • What courses will I take?
    The courses in this program focus on academic preparedness and prerequisite knowledge. The curriculum will vary based on your intended program of study and after an assessment by an Academic Advisor.
