Overview

The Artificial Intelligence in Teaching and Learning Certificate program at Ontario Tech University is designed for educators and professionals who want to integrate artificial intelligence into educational settings. This program provides a comprehensive understanding of AI's role, ethical implications, and practical applications in education and training. Participants will gain hands-on experience through projects and case studies, equipping them with the skills to implement AI effectively in their work.

Additional courses in the series will be offered in the near future.

Who should attend

This AI Program is designed for education and training professionals in all areas.

Courses

  • AI-based Learning Technologies

This course introduces different AI-based learning technologies that are currently used in corporate training, such as chatbots, virtual assistants and gamification.  It also examines the benefits and limitations of these technologies and explores the ways in which more general AI could be used to perform these functions.

    Wednesday, May 8, 15, 22 - 6:00 - 8:00 pm

  • Ethical and Social Issues in the use of AI in Teaching and Learning

This course would have learners explore the ethical and social implications of using AI in support of teaching and learning.  It will include such topics as data privacy, biases in algorithms, AI "hallucinations", the effects of manipulating input to the AI, and the possibility of negative social and economic impacts of AI use.

    Wednesdays - May 29, June 5, 12 - 6:00 - 8:00 pm

  • AI in Writing

This module considers the ways in which AI can support the writing process through each of the following four stages: generating ideas/content, organizing the ideas/content, composing the document, and revising the document. Participants will also learn how to use AI to explore writing for different audiences and purposes.

    Wednesdays - June 19, 26, July 3 - 6:00 - 8:00 pm

  • AI and Simulation Learning

In simulation-based learning (SBL), Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs are often used to generate and control simulation environments. For example, AI may be used to develop learning environments tailored to the background information or past performance of learners. In this course, students will explore the relationships among AI, simulation fidelity, cost effectiveness and skills transfer effectiveness in SBL.

    Wednesdays - July 10, 17, 14 - 6:00 - 8:00 pm

  • Instructor Bios
    Bill Hunter

Dr. Bill Hunter was the founding dean of the Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech where he is currently a professor. He is also an emeritus professor at the University of Calgary. He has taught a variety of courses in educational technology, statistics, measurement, learning theory, human development, program evaluation and other areas of educational psychology. Bill’s research has included topics in educational technology including blended and online learning as evident in his contributions to a 2022 book, : A Guide for Busy Educators, co-edited with Robin Kay.  His recent research interests have centered on the use of ICT to promote social cohesion, best seen in , a 2021 book co-authored with Roger Austin of Ulster University in Northern Ireland. In the winter of 2023, Bill and several of his students discovered a new interest in the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence tools offer to educators.

    Joycelyn Kelly

Joycelyn Kelly brings over 15 years of professional experience in corporate training, career development and workshop facilitation in the community and at the post-secondary level. Joycelyn is passionate about student development, mental health and program delivery using emerging AI technologies. As an Academic Advisor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Durham College, Joycelyn enjoys connecting and applying emerging AI technologies in professional practice -teaching and learning. Joycelyn is a graduate of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University (BA Hons Educational Studies & Digital Technology) and is progressing her research in the Masters of Education program at Ontario Tech University.

    Nikkolas Cheong-Trillo

Nikk is a Professor at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario, and has been teaching since 2014. He teaches introductory biomechanics, physiology, and exercise prescription courses in the Fitness and Health Promotion and Food and Nutrition Management programs. Holding a degree in Kinesiology from Western University, Nikk also works as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, remotely developing professional athletes around the world. In 2019, he traveled to Sweden to coach Team Canada at the World Powerlifting Championships. Nikk has a passion for technology and is currently enrolled in the Master of Education program at Ontario Tech University.

    Morgan Jones

Aside from his family, Morgan Jones’ favourite things in life are flying, teaching and technology.  Simulation-based learning provides a unique intersection of all three. Morgan has been a flying instructor for 25 years, in both the Royal Canadian Air Force and the civilian world.  Prior to joining the RCAF he taught Secondary School Chemistry, Physics, Math and Technology for the Peel District School Board. Additionally, in his youth, Morgan taught First Aid, CPR, swimming and lifeguarding for the Canadian Red Cross Society and the Royal Life Saving Society of Canada. Morgan is a recent graduate of ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University’s Master of Education program. His final project examined the relationship between skills transfer effectiveness and fidelity in simulation-based training.
