Teaching Math and Coding - Elementary
Overview
With the inclusion of coding in the 2020 Ontario Elementary Mathematics Curriculum, there is a need for in-service teachers to learn to code and to teach mathematics through coding. This specialized eight-session (8) course will help you prepare and grow within the new math curriculum. This course provides those with limited or no coding experience the knowledge and the confidence to teach mathematics through coding.

You will receive an ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV University certificate upon successful completion of this micro-credential course.
Who should attend?
You may use the knowledge and skills developed through this course to prepare you for understanding and teaching the 2020 Ontario Elementary Mathematics Curriculum for grades 1 to 8, which now includes coding. Individuals who would benefit from completing this course include:
- Grade 1 to 8 teachers and support staff, particularly those using the Ontario curriculum;
- Preservice teachers and newly certified teachers*;
- Faculty of Education graduate students and alumni;
- Other individuals who are interested in STEAM education.
*Please note that current Ontario Tech University Teacher Candidates and Bachelor of Education students learn this material as part of their program.

Learning objectives
The completion of this short course will enable attendees to acquire essential knowledge and gain experience related to teaching coding elements of the 2020 Ontario Elementary Mathematics Curriculum, including the following:
- Create and remix code to investigate mathematical properties and to solve mathematical problems
- Develop strategies to support students using code to solve mathematics problems with code
- Create and/or adapt math problems that could be solved using code by elementary students
Required elements
Successful completion requires attendance to all eight (8) two-hour online/synchronous sessions, completion of weekly assigned tasks, and a final portfolio project. Upon successful completion, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.Course information

This eight (8) session course is $250 CDN + HST.
This course is not eligible for the ¶¡ÏãÔ°AV Alumni discount.
Registration for this course is through a secure online registration form. All course fees must be paid at the time of registration.
This online course is delivered synchronously. This means you must attend the virtual class at specified dates and times.
Canvas and/or ZOOM will be used to deliver this program online.
This course includes:- Weekly lessons
- Including demos, guided math challenges, and how to support students with troubleshooting
- Group discussions
- Individual work
- Includes at-home work, readings/videos
- Direct and individualized feedback on weekly lessons and assignments
- Lesson-study/mentorship
- The creation of a portfolio to demonstrate your new skills
Requirements
Though this course is open to all, it is expected that all learners in this course have post-secondary education and/or industry experience relating to teaching with the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum for grades 1 to 8.
Suitability for registration in this course is at the learner's discretion.
To obtain the Certificate the participant must:
- Register and make full payment;
- Attend each (i.e. all eight) required online session;
- Actively participate in each (i.e. all eight) of each online sessions (including group discussions and debriefs);
- Successfully complete all assigned individual work; and
- Successfully complete the final project (portfolio).
