Design Thinking and Evaluating User Experience (UX) Certificate Program

Overview:

This three-day certificate program is available for potential custom opportunities. It teaches the fundamentals of Design Thinking and Evaluating User Experience (UX).

Over the course of 3 days, participants will learn a variety of tools to help them identify and become a topic expert of a given problem or paint point, design consumer profiles, and create value propositions for each consumer profile. These tools will include re-framing the problem, rapid ideation, prototyping tools, value proposition design, and the lean canvas model. The end goal is to equip each individual with the tools and knowledge to run the tools confidently with their team post-program.

Courses are aimed at small-to-medium-sized companies wanting to introduce Design Thinking and data-driven decision making into their development process. It focuses on concepts and techniques that require a minimal prior skill.

To earn the Design Thinking and Evaluating User Experience (UX) certificate, participants must complete all three days.

Participants who are interested in portions of the program have the option to register for either the Design Thinking course (2 days) or Evaluating User Experience (UX) course (1 day).

  • Design Thinking (2 days)

    Course summary:

    Design Thinking is a process and a mindset used to help startups, corporates, as well as individuals gain a better insight into the human elements of their products or services. It is a process that has a solution-based approach that breaks into several steps which include empathizing, define, ideate, prototype, and test.

    The purpose of Design Thinking is to gain a deep understanding of the people for whom we’re designing the products or services. By putting the consumer at the forefront of your development, you will truly learn to understand their pain points and develop a solution that has a true product-market fit. This process will also help identify assumptions and test them through constant validation, so the team can better tackle the unknowns through a variety of tools.

    Course Objectives over two days:

    • Gain Design Thinking methodologies and the tools used to help gain customer validation for a proposed idea or solution
    • Developing key messages for stakeholders and customers through persona and value proposition design
    • Present and communicate their validated solutions/ideas
  • Evaluating User Experience (UX)

    Course summary:

    This one-day course teaches the fundamental skills necessary to evaluate user experience, generate actionable insights, and report and communicate relevant findings. As an introduction to user experience (UX) evaluation, this course is intended for digital media developers (software, website, app, simulation, games) interested in UX. Evaluation processes, pipelines, and methodologies (including expert evaluation, qualitative and quantitative methods with users, and data analytics) will be covered.

    Understanding how the end-users interact, behave and experience a product is of vital importance to developers. An accurate understanding of user behaviour during development can help identify and resolve any potential problem areas before release. This course is aimed at small-to-medium-sized companies wanting to introduce data-driven decision making into their development process. It focuses on concepts and techniques that require a minimal prior skill.

    Course Objectives:

    Participants will learn about fundamental constructs in UX evaluation, will acquire knowledge to conduct UX testing, and will learn how to identify and report actionable insights. Following topics will be covered in the course:

    • Contrast the advantages and drawbacks of the different evaluation methods, and choose the right evaluation method for the research question.
    • Evaluate user experience through techniques that do not involve the end-user (e.g., heuristic evaluation) and those that do involve an end-user (e.g., observation, controlled user studies).
    • Present and communicate the results of user experience evaluation
