Teaching Math and Coding - Elementary

Overview:

With the inclusion of coding in the new Ontario Elementary Mathematics Curriculum 2020, there is a need for in-service teachers to learn to code and to teach mathematics through coding. This specialized eight-session (8) course will help you prepare and grow within the new math curriculum. This course provides those with limited or no coding experience the knowledge and the confidence to teach mathematics through coding.

  • You do not need to be a coding expert in order to teach coding;

Who should attend?

You may use the knowledge and skills developed through this course to prepare you for understanding and teaching the new Ontario Elementary Mathematics Curriculum for grade 1 to 8 which now includes coding, such as:

  • Grade 1 to 8 teachers and support staff, particularly those using the Ontario curriculum;
  • Preservice teachers and newly certified teachers*;
  • Faculty of Education graduate students and alumni;
  • Other individuals interested in STEAM education.

*Please note that current Ontario Tech University Teacher Candidates and Bachelor of Education students learn this material as part of their program.

What you'll learn 

  • Create and remix code to investigate mathematical properties and to solve mathematical problems
  • Develop strategies to support students using code to solve mathematics problems
  • Create and/or adapt math problems that could be solved using code by elementary students 

Required elements

Complete eight (8) two-hour virtual in-class sessions, weekly assigned tasks, and final portfolio project to complete the Introduction to Math and Coding course and receive a Certificate.

  • Learning objectives

    The completion of this short course will enable attendees to acquire essential knowledge and gain experience related to teaching coding elements of the new Ontario Elementary Mathematics Curriculum 2020, including the following:

    • Create and remix code to investigate mathematical properties and to solve mathematical problems
    • Develop strategies to support students using code to solve mathematics problems with code
    • Create and/or adapt math problems that could be solved using code by elementary students 
  • Course design

    Weekly course meeting times allow for an ongoing, practical learning cycle with individualized mentoring and feedback. Learn new concepts in-class, plan and implement these concepts on your own throughout the week, then debrief and reflect on your experience with an expert and your peers in the next class to cement your learning. You will also create a portfolio of your work to demonstrate your new skills.

Though this course is open to all, it is expected that all learners in this course have post-secondary education and/or industry experience relating to teaching with the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum for grades 1 to 8.

Suitability for registration in this course is at the learner's discretion.

Online course delivery is a synchronous format. This means you must attend the virtual class at specified dates and times.

Canvas and/or Google Meet will be used to deliver this program online.

This course includes:
  • Weekly lessons
    • Including demos, guided math challenges, and how to support students with trouble shooting
  • Group discussions
  • Individual work
    • Includes at-home work, readings/videos
    • Direct and individualized feedback on weekly lessons and assignments
  • Lesson-study/mentorship
  • The creation of a portfolio to demonstrate your new skills

Fees

This eight (8) session course is $250 CDN + HST.

Registration for this course is through a secure online registration form. All course fees must be paid at the time of registration.

To obtain the Certificate the participant must:

  • Register and make full payment;
  • Attend each (i.e. all eight) required online session;
  • Actively participant in each (i.e. all eight) of each online sessions (includes group discussions and debriefs);
  • Successfully complete all assigned individual work; and
  • Successfully complete the final project (portfolio).

Those completing the Introduction to Math and Coding course are subject the policies of 間眅埶AV University and Continuous Learning. 間眅埶AV policies can be found in the . Continuous Learning policies can be found  in the Regulations section of the Continuous Learning website. Specifically, those completing the Introduction to Math and Coding course are expected to adhere to the the General and Open enrolment regulations.

Attendance requirements

Learners must attend and actively participate in all eight (8) virtual in-class sessions (including group discussions and debriefs). See the "Certificate requirements" section above for all requirements to obtain a University Certificate for this course.
