About Us

The Teardrop72 “about us” page is more accurately titled the “about Preston” page. I began my exploration of teardrops in the fall of 2005, following the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Horrified and shocked at the level of human suffering that occurred, I took it upon myself to ensure a similar situation would not devastate my family. I created a 72 hour kit and placed it and all of my other comfort items in one room, as directed by emergency preparedness guidelines. This level of preparedness was comforting, but somehow it didn’t feel complete.

I began to think about the specific and realistic disasters that may hit my region: earthquakes, snow/ice storms, tornados, and terrorist attacks. I quickly realized my feeling of lacking preparedness was centered around the most likely to occur event of an earthquake. An earthquake that would require my needing a 72 hour kit would certainly flatten our 80 year old home with my precious life sustaining kit underneath the rubble. Thus, I needed a storage solution independent of my home that was earthquake proof and mobile.

After soaking in just about every minute of Katrina coverage for a week, I needed a break and switched over to an hour long show on RV’s. This show spent ten minutes profiling teardrops and introduced my new earthquake solution. The teardrop was light, economical to pull, less expensive, and certainly capable of storing my 72 hour kit. I also loved the idea that it would double as a small utility/cargo trailer and even had room for my family to sleep in if necessary.

I spent the following month searching for plans to build a basic teardrop at minimal cost. With each new website visited, I learned new ideas and generated a list of criteria that my teardrop must include. I quickly realized no set of plans met my criteria to perfection, so I created a set of my own plans and broke ground on the prototype. I put my years of construction knowledge into this project and the first teardrop was born.

I planned to build and sell about three teardrops and roll the profits into a final build that I would keep. The fourth teardrop was indeed mine and so was a new expertise that my customers, friends, and neighbors were quick to compliment. The confidence of a solid product and my love for building opened my eyes to the opportunity of being able to help other individuals and families secure an emergency storage solution and highly functional recreational vehicle that makes sense on so many levels.

I look forward to working with you on your custom teardrop build!
